That means a major tournament will be played in Germany following the Olympics and the Beach Volleyball European Championships in Vienna.

Iconic Hamburg stadium

The tournament will be hosted in Hamburg from August 19th – 22nd by German Volleyball Sport GmbH, the DVV marketing agency, the city of Hamburg and the Dutch agency Sportworx. The event is supposed to take place at the Stadion am Rothenbaum.

Development of the sport

Sportworx continues to develop the young sport of King of the Court. Already this year it will be possible for everyone in the world to organize a King of the Court event. In addition, Sportworx will continue to put events on the calendar itself, soon more will be announced for 2021.

FIVB General Director Fabio Azevedo said:

“We are very much looking forward to the exciting, action-packed King of the Court format making its debut in Germany. We have no doubt that Hamburg will host an incredible event which will be enjoyed by our talented athletes and passionate beach volleyball fans in Germany and around the world. King of the Court is completely different to our other beach volleyball formats and so it gives us an opportunity to further grow the global popularity of the sport, attracting new audiences and engaging younger generations. The event format is also well suited to the IOC and Olympic Movement’s vision of focusing on more youth-focused events.”

René Hecht, President of the German Volleyball Federation, is excited: “It is fascinating to see how fast King of the Court has developed over the past few years. We are very proud that we, in cooperation with the agency Sportworx and the city of Hamburg, are able to integrate this format successfully as part of a national tour, including ranking points, for the first time worldwide. The diverse possibilities of our sports seem unlimited. All fans can look forward to Beach Volleyball firework.”

The excitement for the German Teams becomes even higher due to the special situation based on the date: It is the last tournament before the German Beach Volleyball Championships will be played and therefore the last possibility to snatch a ticket to the grand season ending.

Andy Grote, Senator for Internal Affairs and Sport of the city of Hamburg, is also looking forward to the premiere: “We are excited to have once again a spectacular Beach Volleyball event with international teams which is an absolute premiere at the same time. Especially in the crisis we want to set new impulses for the “Active City” Hamburg and are going to establish an innovative and exciting format for the first time in Germany. King of the Court could be a part of the Olympic Games in 2028 already. Hamburg is not only the stage but also paves the way for highly attractive games with national and international teams.”

Wilco Nijland, creator of this King of the Court format and Sportworx COO, which was the first company to organise an international King of the Court event in 2018, said:

“In the brief but very successful history of King of the Court, we noticed that the players enjoy this format which also has lots of room for future development. Hamburg is one of the beach volleyball capitals of Europe, and the German Beach Volleyball Tour is, in my opinion, one of the top three tours in the world. So we are delighted to be able to organise the first official King of the Court event in Germany. I have no doubt that we will be able to deliver a great event to German beach volleyball fans!”

Julius Thole, German Vice beach volleyball world champion, is excited: “I am really happy to have a King of the Court tournament for the first time in Germany. It is a young and dynamic format where all fans can enjoy the sport in a pure and spectacular way. For us it is as a great signal to have such an amazing event in our beach volleyball capital Hamburg.”
